83 Movie Review: The story celebrates India's first world cup victory
On June 25, 1983, the Lord's Cricket Ground witnessed 14 men beat the World Champions West Indies and Kapil DEVILS' picked up the World Cup, putting India back onto the cricket world stage. 83 celebrates India's historic win and recreates everything that happened right before the start of the 1983 Cricket World Cup, to India lifting the winning trophy. The movie is exceptional in all aspects, especially the screenplay and direction that stand out.
The perfect portrayal of Kapil Dev by Ranveer Singh is getting a lot of applause. Deepika Padukone, who has also produced the film, essays the role of his on-screen spouse, Romi Dev, in
83. The movie is directed by Kabir Khan and stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Ammy Virk, Hardy Sandhu, and Saqib Saleem.
The director has also used the real match footage alongside the reel match action and this has been done extremely well. 83 is receiving rave reviews from critics and even those in the Bollywood industry as well, suggesting that 83 is a movie to watch.
"The journey of becoming a team that could trust itself to defeat the mightiest men in the gentleman’s game, is what Kabir Khan’s dramatic ‘83’ is all about ... Kabir Khan does set a high benchmark for himself, once again." - The Times of India
“Kabir Khan’s ‘83 recreates that day with fidelity, and, yes, let it be said, in full Bollywood style, suffused with song, dance, drama, colour. Ranveer Singh disappears into his Kapil Dev even as each of Kapil’s Devils is given their own moment in this faithful recreation of India’s 1983 World Cup win.” - The Indian Express
"Kabir Khan’s sports biopic not only captures the emotional heft of the success story of the underdogs, but also delivers a well-researched document in the popular idiom." - The Hindu
“At several places, 83 gets high on nationalism, which could have been easily avoided. But that's something one kind of overlooks for the pride and joy you experience on seeing the team lift that trophy.” - The Hindustan Times
