US Democrat Nancy Pelosi has met Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen despite sharp warnings from China against the visit. This trip is the first by any top US officials in 25 years. Pelosi, who arrived in Taipei late on Tuesday, addressed the parliament on Wednesday. She praised President Tsai Ing-wen, who Beijing suspects of pushing for formal independence - a red line for China.

Meanwhile, China has summoned the American envoy in Beijing to lodge a protest overNancy Pelosi's high-profile visit to Taipei, warning that Washington will "pay a price" for its "mistakes" and asked it to stop using the Taiwan issue to contain China in any form. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, China vowed



to hold diehard Taiwan "separatists" accountable and impose criminal punishments on them. As per Taiwan News, Taiwan may have to brace for prolonged military provocations from China.

Taiwan and China split in 1949 after the Communists won a civil war on the mainland.
