India Records Over 19,893 New Covid Cases, 47 Deaths In 24 Hours
India on Thursday reported a total of 19,893 new Covid cases, taking the total number of infections to 4,40,87,037. However, the active cases have declined to 1,36,478. With 53 new Covid related deaths in the 24 hours, India's coronavirus death tally rose to 5,26,530. The coronavirus positivity rate and daily Covid cases in Delhi also have risen steadily in the last one week.
China Military Drills Around Taiwan Unjustified, Says EU Diplomatic Chief
The EU's diplomatic chief Thursday condemned China's planned military exercises around Taiwan. "There is no justification to use a visit as pretext for aggressive military
activity in the Taiwan Strait. It is normal and routine for legislators from our countries to travel internationally," EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell tweeted.
‘India has given us a breath of life,’ says Sri Lankan President
In his inaugural parliament address, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said, "‘India has given us a breath of life". He also said that Sri Lanka’s hardships will persist till the end of year. “We are in great danger. The country could extricate and be secured from that danger only if we all face this challenge together as one people. It is vital that the honourable members of this Parliament as well as the entire populace contribute with their own strength towards the effort of nation building,” he said, in his first address to the House since being elected President on July 20.
India to host UNSC special meet on counterterrorism in October
India will host diplomats of the 15-nation UN Security Council on October 29 for a special meeting on counter-terrorism. Current members of the Security Council are Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway and the UAE, along with five permanent members China, France, Russia, the UK and the US.
China launches military drills around Taiwan
Live-fire drills began in six identified zones around the island at noon local time, Al Jazeera reported citing China state media. China on Wednesday had commenced military drills around Taiwan's main island.
